Huanggang Port: Revolutionizing passenger flow between Hong Kong and Shenzhen

Powering the world’s largest land port

Facing border bottlenecks, the Huanggang Port was transformed to meet modern cross-boundary demands. By introducing the "cooperative inspection and one-time release" clearance flow, the redevelopment brings unprecedented speed and seamless efficiency to this critical Shenzhen-Hong Kong gateway.

Behind this upgrade, KONE people flow solutions support the handling of massive daily passenger volumes through a revolutionary vertical clearance flow. Despite operating under two different regulatory frameworks, KONE successfully delivered all 184 sets of elevators and escalators within a one-year timeframe.

From Luohu and Liantang to today's Huanggang Port, KONE once again demonstrates its capability to deliver complex cross-border projects. As the world's largest land port and the only 24-hour passenger link between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the new port represents a major milestone in enhancing mobility across the Greater Bay Area.

184 units driving seamless vertical passenger flow

Breaking away from traditional horizontal border-crossing layouts, the Huanggang Port utilizes the height of its nine-storey complex to create an innovative vertical passenger flow arrangement. Immigration facilities are distributed across different levels, freeing valuable ground-level space for public transport while improving overall passenger movement efficiency.

To support this new layout, KONE supplied all 184 elevators and escalators across the development, including 102 elevators equipped with regenerative drive technology and 82 escalators. Designed to serve up to 300,000 passengers per day, the solution helps reduce walking distances, minimize waiting times and improve the overall passenger experience.

AI predictive maintenance for 24-hour operations

As the only 24-hour land checkpoint connecting Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the Huanggang Port requires exceptional equipment reliability. KONE 24/7 Connected Services continuously monitors all units using real-time data and AI technology to identify potential issues before they impact operations.

By shifting from reactive to predictive maintenance, the solution supports seamless round-the-clock operations while helping maintain service availability for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters. Looking ahead, KONE aims to further integrate elevator and escalator data with building systems to support passenger flow analysis, operational planning and resource optimization.

Navigating complex cross-border regulations

Navigating different regulatory standards and operational requirements, delivering a project of this scale requires close collaboration across both Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Despite this, KONE successfully completed the installation and commissioning of all 184 units within a compressed one-year timeframe.

From Luohu and Liantang to the Huanggang Port, KONE is one of the few companies capable of delivering complex cross-border projects. By pairing Hong Kong's world-class service standards with Shenzhen's local technical talent and strategic location, this project is a testament to KONE’s cross-border capabilities, delivered through the close collaboration of our Hong Kong and Shenzhen teams to fuel the ongoing development of the Greater Bay Area.
